Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, David Fincher, and a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald — it sounds like a project destined to become a major box office hit and collect every possible award.
Well, in some way, that turned out to be true. In 2008, Fincher released The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a film about a man who does not age, but instead grows younger as the years go by.
The film employed cutting-edge (especially for its time) CGI technology to age and de-age the actor, of course combined with makeup. And as strange as it may sound, the most important element of this film is still the story.
All of us go through a certain life journey: some people pursue what they love, some hardly reflect on their lives, while others constantly face new challenges and adventures. Usually, we describe such life stories as “interesting”.
Throughout his long life, the film’s protagonist experiences life at sea, goes to war, travels to India, and, of course, meets many remarkable people along the way. Each of them is strange in their own way and interesting in their own right, as every encounter gives the main character a chance to learn something new.
The film has not aged at all in nearly 20 years since its release, and perhaps this is where the magic of cinema lies — like those very clocks that run backwards. Take the time to revisit the film, and remember that at the right moment, you can always find the strength within yourself to start all over again.
