Spike Lee is known worldwide for his satirical — and sometimes serious — films about Black characters in vastly different stories of our world, from Malcolm X to BlacKkKlansman, and beyond.

Recently, at the Cannes Film Festival, he presented his new movie “Highest 2 Lowest”, which follows an aging rapper — played by the incredible Denzel Washington — whose son is kidnapped. He sets off on a mission to find him, all the while plotting to take down the terrorists responsible.

The film is a musical comedy: for example, the showdown between the protagonist and the gang members is staged as a full-blown rap battle. This not only proves that Spike Lee “still got it” but also shows that, despite time and context, filmmakers will always find ways to update their work and make it as original as possible.

The Cannes Film Festival left fans and critics with a wealth of memorable — and sometimes bizarre — moments, and Highest 2 Lowest may well become one of them.
