Belgium is remarkable in itself for its mix of cultures and the presence of several languages – English, French and, of course, Dutch and even German. People come to this country to relax, unwind, admire the architecture and, of course, to have a great time which isn’t hard to do in Belgium.
The famous fries were invented here, and in Antwerpen you’ll find super delicious waffles with caramel or chocolate — a perfect match for a warm, bitter coffee.
The very name Antwerpen is associated with the legend of the giant Druon Antigonus, who charged a toll on those passing along the Scheldt River and cut off the hands of those who refused to pay. According to the legend, the Roman warrior Brabo defeated Antigonus, cut off his hand and threw it into the river. This is where the name of the city comes from: “hand werpen” in Dutch means “to throw a hand”. However, there is also a more scientific explanation, which connects the name with an ancient Germanic word meaning “reclamation” or “territory washed by water”. Thus, the name Antwerpen has both a popular and a scientific explanation, both of which are related to water and a hand.
Despite this rather brutal — though perhaps fair — history, the city has an incredibly warm and kind energy, especially when you spend time there with loved ones and close friends.
At night the city feels empty, as if it’s entirely yours, like you’re the main character of a film with an unlimited budget and beautiful visuals. Sitting and gazing across to the left bank of Antwerpen from a cool riverside spot is a rare kind of pleasure. It may not be available to everyone, but one thing’s for sure — many people need it.
