Kazimir Malevich’s painting Black Square astonished countless people when it first appeared in 1915, and it hardly needs repeating how deeply it influenced the world of art as a whole — becoming one of the most iconic symbols in global culture.
The artist, of Ukrainian origin, was born in Kyiv and died in Saint Petersburg. He lived a life full of challenges and fascinating moments — perhaps that’s exactly why 435 Films, Lehmann Sisters, and several other production companies have come together to create a film about Malevich, exploring both his career and his personal life.
The visuals in this new Ukrainian film are stunning, and the cast is no less impressive. Rising Ukrainian star Vitalii Azhnov takes the lead, while Oleksiy Horbunov, a veteran of Ukrainian cinema, appears in a supporting role. Could this be something reminiscent of Amadeus or even Oppenheimer?
Maybe so. And don’t forget — the trailer is already available online, and the film premieres in cinemas on September 11th, when you’ll get a chance to experience what might just be a new masterpiece of contemporary Ukrainian cinema.
