The Secret of Success: “Harry Potter”

Anyone even remotely connected to the film industry has been following the news surrounding the production of the new Harry Potter series from Warner Bros., based on the bestselling books by British author J.K. Rowling, the first of which was published in 1997.

At the time, Rowling was a single mother who was trying to support herself and her child financially. She spent her time writing a novel about a young wizard, with only a small amount of confidence that it would ever become a success.

To the young writer’s surprise, the first novel—and every book that followed—became a massive hit, inspiring Warner Bros. to develop an entire film franchise based on the series.

The first film featured a number of renowned British actors, including Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Richard Harris, Robbie Coltrane, and many others. The young leads were, of course, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe, all of whom were only around 10 to 12 years old during filming.

The movie was given a substantial budget of $125 million and was directed by Chris Columbus, best known for Home Alone. It was released in November 2001 and became a worldwide phenomenon, grossing over $1 billion at the global box office and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of its era, second only to Titanic.

Or perhaps the secret of its success was magic?
