This May’s Cannes Film Festival featured an impressive range of captivating and memorable films — from dramas to comedies, from mysteries to thrillers, and of course, biopics.
Few expected it, but one of the festival’s surprise hits turned out to be Limonov: The Ballad of Edichka, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. The film tells the story of the cult Russian poet Eduard Limonov, known for his poetry, flamboyant short stories, and numerous interviews during the final years of his life.

The leading role is played by Ben Whishaw, and the narrative focuses on Limonov’s youth and his life in America and Europe.

The film was generally well-received by critics at the festival, and many audience members were stunned—few expected to see a film about a poet who seemed to have faded from public attention following his death in 2020.

The film is set to hit cinemas in many countries in early September, giving viewers the chance to experience Kirill Serebrennikov’s bold and unusual vision—just like the extraordinary life of Eduard Limonov himself.
