The Safdie Brothers rose to fame in the late 2010s with their electrifying films “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems”. Around the same time, another figure was dominating a very different part of Hollywood — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who became a key player in the Fast & Furious franchise.
So, how do these two stories connect?
Well… they didn’t — until now. Everything changed a few days ago with the release of the first trailer for The Smashing Machine, a new film starring Dwayne Johnson as aging MMA fighter Mark Kerr, who’s been battling in the ring for years.

But a heavily transformed Johnson isn’t the only major name attached to the film. Emily Blunt co-stars, and even Ukrainian boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk makes an appearance.

Plot details remain mostly under wraps, though it’s clear the story will explore Kerr’s personal demons and struggles outside the ring.

Produced by A24, “The Smashing Machine” hits theaters on October 3. That’s when audiences will get to see a more vulnerable, raw portrayal of masculinity, as Mark Kerr fights not just opponents — but his own past.
