Kitten Hans and kitten Tin were sitting on the edge of a fence, counting the stars in the sky.
“Listen, Hans, shouldn’t you be going to sleep? You’re going out for a walk with Margosha tomorrow”.
“Yes, I remember”, — Hans replied thoughtfully.
“Is something wrong? Are you upset about something? Just look at how beautiful the stars are tonight”.
“Tin, it’s not only the stars that are beautiful. You’re very beautiful too”.
“But I’m not a cat, I’m a tomcat. Why are you telling me that? What, did you get neutered or something?”
“No, Tin. I just want you to know that you’re a very good cat. And Margosha would definitely agree to go for a walk with you”.
“Thank you, Hans. But you’re the one going with her!”
“Yeah… I’d rather just count the stars”.
“Why would you say that? Have you eaten too much herring or something? She’s very beautiful”.
“She really is beautiful. But when I look at the stars, they don’t expect anything from me. They’re not in a hurry anywhere. They just shine back at me. But when I look into her eyes, I see her expectations — her emotions, her feelings. She’s waiting for something from me”.
“What is she waiting for?”
“I don’t know. I look at her and feel that I’m waiting for something from myself too — and I’m scared. I’m afraid I won’t be a good enough cat for her. Maybe I was only made to count the stars in the sky…”
The kitten sadly lowered his little face.
“And I think, Hans, that Margosha is no different from a star in the sky. You think she’s expecting something from you, but when you look at a star, you don’t wonder whether it will fall or keep shining. You simply think about how beautiful it is. Maybe in her eyes, you are the same kind of star — one that can simply be admired, without expecting anything unnecessary. Don’t let silly thoughts take away the light that has always lived inside your heart.
