A Texas native, heartthrob, devoted father, astronaut on screen, sports enthusiast, and bestselling author — these are just a few ways to describe Matthew McConaughey.

The 2000s became a launching pad for many Hollywood stars, but the decade is also remembered for the careers that stalled after actors chose less successful roles.

McConaughey had already made a name for himself in the United States by the late 1990s thanks to Dazed and Confused and A Time to Kill. These performances established him as Hollywood’s charming leading man, and as the new decade began, he was offered countless roles built around that very image.

Films such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Failure to Launch, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past firmly belonged to the romantic comedy genre. There were a few exceptions, including a supporting role in Tropic Thunder, but for the most part, McConaughey had become synonymous with lighthearted romance.

Everything changed around 2010, when the actor decided to walk away from these “safe” and predictable roles in favor of more dramatic and challenging projects.

For nearly a year, McConaughey found himself without work. Then came offers for Killer Joe and The Lincoln Lawyer. Neither film became a massive box-office sensation, but they gave him something even more valuable: the respect of critics and audiences alike. Soon after, director Jeff Nichols cast him in the independent drama Mud — a performance that reportedly caught the attention of Christopher Nolan.

Dallas Buyers Club earned McConaughey an Academy Awards Oscar, and his transformation for the role was astonishing — he lost more than 20 kilograms to portray the character. That same year, he appeared in The Wolf of Wall Street by Martin Scorsese, and all of this happened before his unforgettable performance in True Detective.

Perhaps the secret of success lies in accepting change — and having the courage to follow your heart.
