People have started to forget that before superheroes, chosen ones, and Bruce Willis, there were other action heroes: cowboys and bounty hunters. The story of Zorro, for example, has been adapted for the screen more than ten times with different actors and storylines. The character became so iconic that he eventually inspired the creators of other heroes — including Batman himself.
Now let’s jump ahead to 2012, when Quentin Tarantino released Django Unchained, heavily inspired by 1960s spaghetti westerns and the original film starring Franco Nero.

The movie became a box-office hit, earned Tarantino an Academy Awards Oscar, and even sparked rumors and ideas about a possible crossover with Zorro, with Antonio Banderas rumored for the role, while Tarantino himself would reportedly write the full screenplay.

After a limited comic-book series, conversations about the project gradually faded away. However, quite recently, Sony Pictures officially announced that Brian Helgeland (Legend, A Knight’s Tale, L.A. Confidential) will write the screenplay for the film.

Fans are now wondering whether the studio will bring back Jamie Foxx and Antonio Banderas, since both actors are now well over fifty — although that certainly doesn’t take away from the excellent shape they remain in. So it’s entirely possible that audiences could be getting a complete reboot, or perhaps even an entirely new western cinematic universe. What do you think?
