The Safdie brothers reshaped Hollywood in 2017 with the release of Good Time, starring Robert Pattinson in the lead role. This was followed in 2019 by Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler, after which the brothers went their separate ways. Benny Safdie directed The Smashing Machine last year, while Josh Safdie worked on a film with Timothée Chalamet — Marty Supreme.

The film was released in late 2025 and has already managed to win over many viewers. The director deliberately subverts expectations — the trailer gave little indication of what kind of story awaited audiences, and it turns out the film is about a deeply controversial character who can hardly be described as a “good guy”.

Marty, played by Chalamet, repeatedly disappoints the audience in classic Safdie fashion, provoking anger and perhaps even shaking the viewer’s faith in people. Yet this is not the end of the journey: through mistakes and hard lessons, the character gradually learns, and ultimately finds a sense of freedom.

Will he win the tournament, fix his personal life, and achieve all of his goals? That is for the viewer to discover — and then decide for themselves whether Marty Supreme deserves an Oscar.
